A player earns the right to become a free agent and we have to respect that. I can tell you that this will not be an easy decision for Vanek and he honestly loves playing for the Isles and living on the Island. I have also been told that the return for Vanek will be significant. We have to be honest with ourselves here, if Vanek does not resign they HAVE to move him at the deadline; he cannot walk for free. In a perfect world Vanek gets moved and signs with the Islanders on July 1st but I know that sounds like a pipe dream.

Well said and I agree completely. I feel he is going to have to be moved at the deadline, and hold no ill will towards him. I just hope he returns July 1st.

Thanks Dan! It all comes down to Vanek. You have to think the Isles knew what Vanek would be looking for in terms of contract. No way do they not trade him if he is not signed by the deadline.

So let me get this straight. The Isles who are in the middle of a playoff race are gonna send down one of their better D-men for the last 5 or 6 games before the break so he can play in the AHL during the break???

He is not coming back. If he doesn't sign by March 5th you will never see him again. Minnesota will sign him and I'm sure he'll take a little less to go there as well. Its a shame to because that 1st line is dynamite They better get a haul for him and that still won't take the sting away from having to find yet another guy to play with JT. Joke!!!

I don't think Donovan has been one of our better defenseman last 5 or 6 games

It will be a real shame even with a good return on a trade. I cannot see Vanek signing with the Isles if he is traded. The family pressure to return home will be too great.

Plus they won't be able to give him that extra year because he won't be one of their own

Do any of you read the blog?

" The Islanders will have to make another move soon as they intend for rookie Calvin deHaan to play during the Olympic break in Bridgeport and he can only play one more game before reaching his limit. In a perfect world Hamonic is activated Thursday and deHaan goes down for the break."

The Isles aren't in the middle of a playoff race. They shouldn't make any decisions based on a pipe dream that they could make the playoffs.

6 points out. Not exactly a pipe dream and those teams have to win their games in hand. My point being Dehaan has proven he is an NHL player and doesn't need to be sent down. If he does and gets hurt you guys will be killing snow for sending him down

Its really sad when your teams only defenseman who is showing any poise with the puck is a rookie

It's a total pipe dream. As well as they have played they can't even get out of the bottom 5 in the league. They haven't been able to get out of the bottom 3 in the east. It's absurd to think they would suddenly catapult past the 6 teams ahead of them with 28 games remaining. Florida is 1 point behind with 2 games in hand, so the Isles may even drop down.

Well I read that the Wild's owner lost a poop ton of money the last 2 years so hopefully that factors in Vanek not resigning there. I think if it comes July 1st and Vanek doesn't sign with Wild he will come back here

regardless, we have to prepare as if he won't come back. If we can get a good goalie prospect/young goalie (ie. Lehner, Andersen, Jones) a good young winger/defender, and a pick, I'd be ok.

If we traded Vanek and he resigned again in the summer, the Isles would be a scary team next season...

If they send the players down, can they recall them after the Olympics? Strome and de Haan won't be stuck down there the rest of the year, right?

Right. They will both be up after the break unless Cappy prefers Martinek & Regin
